VivAer®, the non-invasive, office-friendly solution for nasal airway obstruction (NAO), was featured in Dental Sleep Practice Magazine. The article, titled “Nasal Airway Obstruction and Precision Oral Appliance Therapy in the Treatment of OSA”, discussed the connection between nasal airway obstruction and sleep disordered breathing as well as the importance of treating NAO before oral appliance therapy is used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Edward T. Sall, MD, DDS, MBA, obstructive sleep apnea specialist and author of the article, recommended sleep dentists assess all patients for NAO prior to initiating oral appliance therapy, with the NOSE Score Questionnaire or Cottle Maneuver shared as validated assessment tools. For patients with NAO or nasal valve dysfunction, Dr. Sall recommended referring the patient to an otolaryngologist for treatment, with the VivAer nasal airway remodeling procedure named as a reliable treatment option.
He shared, “The field of sleep medicine and specifically our understanding of the different phenotypes of obstructive sleep apnea continue to evolve. The more we understand and address both the anatomic and non-anatomic factors in the pathophysiology of OSA the more likely we will increase the efficacy of oral appliance therapy in the treatment of OSA.”
