Vivaer®: Non-Invasive Nasal Airway Remodeling

Vivaer is a new, non-invasive treatment that can be performed in your ENT Physician’s office or clinic to help you breathe more easily if your obstruction is in the front part of your nose. If the Cottle’s maneuver or use of nasal strips helps you breathe better, then Vivaer may be an effective treatment option for you.

Vivaer uses controlled low power radiofrequency energy to gently remodel target areas within your nasal passages, without any incisions. The procedure subtly alters the interior shape of the narrowest region of the nasal passage to improve airflow. These improvements in airflow can result in significant enhancements to your breathing.

The Vivaer treatment typically takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish when performed in a physician’s office, and has proven to have a long-lasting effect.

Proven Clinical Results

Study Design

A prospective, multi-center, non-randomized trial was conducted with 33 patients suffering from anterior nasal obstruction. Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scores were recorded prior to treatment, immediately following treatment, and at 30 and 90-day follow-up evaluations. Endoscopic images of the treatment area were also recorded and observed.

The NOSE Scale

  • Validated evaluation instrument measuring subjective sensation of nasal obstruction
  • Developed by Stewart and colleagues
  • Patient score 0 (no problem) to 4 (severe problem) for 5 parameters of nasal airway obstruction: stuffiness, blockage, nose breathing, sleeping, upon exercise.
  • Multiplied by 5 to give a 0-100 scale

Change in NOSE severity class from baseline and at 30 and 90 days

Main Study Observations

  • Improvement in nasal obstruction symptoms – quality of life measured by the NOSE score showed an average reduction of 53% at 90 days following treatment
  • Well tolerated procedure – the procedure was performed under local anesthetic and postoperative pain scores were very low and no patient required prescription analgesics
  • No cosmetic issues – there were no visible changes to the outward appearance of the nose and minor tissue damage on the internal treated site resolved within the observation period
  • No adverse events reported – no local scarring or adhesion formation was observed and no adverse events were reported
